When did men twerking become gay?
‘Love Is Blind’: And other problems I have with the Fun Police for men

Writer’s note: This post was originally published on Medium’s “Tickled” and has been moved to the new Substack blog in July 2023.
After every season of “Love Is Blind,” I end up with a headache watching these couples. Of course there are the Tiffanys and the Bretts who make me cheer them on like they’re the Obamas. Then, there are the Iyannas and Jarrettes who I cross my fingers for and hope they make it last (the latter divorced). However, I’m usually left watching this show and shaking my head, thinking, “I know why you’re single now.” (And that sounds extra judgmental from someone who would only get married in separate homes.) There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being single. There is something disturbing about being a single villain.

And every single season, there is a villain:
Jessica (Season 1)
Abhishek “Shake” Chatterjee (Season 2 — although Danielle Ruhl had her moments)
A Season 3 trio — Alexa Alfia (the Urban Dictionary antagonizer), Brennon Lemieux (domestic violence arrestee who badgered Cole Barnett) and Zanab Jaffrey (who made me hate mandarin oranges)
Then Season 4 came along, and there were so many villains I lost count:
Vanessa Joy Lachey (the most horrendous host in television history)
Kwame Appiah (who redeemed himself 95% during the reunion — although his take on black women is questionable)
Irina Solomonova (who competed with Shelby to be world’s worst friend)
Micah Lussier (who deserves friends like Irina and Shelby)
Jackelina Bonds (whether she liked Josh or not, she could’ve done Marshall a solid and not let him go try on suits for a nonexistent wedding)
I’ve written about “Love Is Blind” far too many times already (one, two, three, four) and planned to stop, but the leaked texts from Jackelina regarding Marshall Glaze have caught my interest, specifically this one — “He fosho gives me vibes cause he use to twrk on the bed & I told him I was coo off that & he was like yeah. So now this time I told him to be more aggressive with me. He’s hard fosho but sometimes he can be SWEET.”

Now, I could easily write about the more obvious argument: don’t dish out what you can’t take. (She repeatedly made jabs on the show about his manhood and being too sensitive, but in an off-screen conversation, she was upset about him quipping back that she had jawbones like a man.) Does she indeed have strong jawlines? Yaaaaas! But neither of those is my issue. What strikes me strange is why it seems “sweet” or gives her gay vibes when a man can dance.
